Violence in Healthcare: What to Do When Violence Occurs

Despite all our efforts to prevent it, violence in healthcare can and does occur, affecting almost all healthcare workers at some time during their career, and in some areas more than others. Through the use of realistic scenarios, this program will discuss the 4 R’s of dealing with violence in healthcare according to NIOSH and OSHA recommendations:

Program Highlights

  • Recognizing the signals for escalating agitation and assaultive behavior or criminal intent

  • Resolving conflicts through verbal de-escalation, and avoiding actions that may provoke a violent response

  • Responding quickly if the situation is out of your control, including getting help for yourself and others

  • Reporting and documenting after an event, including debriefing and post-event counseling
